With a design reminiscent of traditional Cape Cod, this three-story Manhattan Beach home pushes the envelope with a steel frame, wood siding, metal barrel roof and rooftop deck with a fireplace. Light infuses the home through windows and skylights. A three-story switchback steel stair is the central piece of the interior, with warm treads and handrails of lyptus. Lyptus is a South American hardwood selected for its sustainable forestry and bright, cherry color. It was used throughout the house in all cabinetry and hardwood flooring to tie in with the stairs. Due to the small lot size, the building footprint is a narrow 23-1/2 x 80 feet. An adjacent, active pedestrian street, surrounding alleys and overhead power lines called for special city permits, rigorous planning, and very specific construction equipment.
